C.C.T.V. CRASH COURSE

The information below is designed to educate you on the different components that make up a closed circuit television monitoring system. We furnish and install numerous other products and product-lines, but for educational purpose, show only certain items.

Cameras, Mounts, Lenses, And Outdoor Housings

Standard resolution cameras have approximately 380 lines of horizontal resolution. These horizontal lines make up a picture on the screen. These cameras can used be when lighting is constant, when there is not a considerable amount of back ground light, or when fine detail is not a concern. Picture quality is good. These cameras are less expensive than high-resolution camera. The lens, mount, and power supply is sold separately. Available in color or black and white.

High-resolution cameras have approximately 500 to 600 lines of horizontal resolution. The more horizontal lines, the more detail and sharpness on the screen. These cameras can be used when fine detail is a concern. Usually we install use these cameras outdoors, or where there is considerable backlight. The lens, mount, and power supply is sold separately. These cameras will provide a picture with very little light. Available in color or black and white.

Lenses are sold separately with the above cameras. A fixed lens is chosen by the area you want to cover. For example, a 2.8-millimeter lens would be used to cover an entire room where an 8-millimeter lens would be used to cover a person’s face entering that room. We sell only automatic iris lenses, which adjust to light changes. Variable focal lenses allow the installer to actually "dial in" the customers coverage preference.

Outdoor housings protect the above cameras and lenses from moisture, heat and cold. Each housing has a heater and fan or blower inside. There are also electronic thermostats inside the housing that trigger the heater and blower when to turn on. The housings heater and blower protects the camera from moisture, cold and heat.

Outdoor housings are also available in a dome mount or vandal or bullet proof versions.

Bullet cameras are smaller than the cameras above. The cameras come with a lens already attached, cable, power supply, and mount. These cameras can be used indoors or outdoors and are more economically priced than the regular cameras shown above. Available in color or black and white.

Self-contained specialty outdoor cameras with standard or high resolution are also available. These weatherproof cameras can be where space is in issue. These cameras do not have the bulk of a regular camera with an outdoor housing. Mounts are furnished but the power supplies are sold separately. Available in color or black and white.

Night cameras are available that will light up an area at a limited distance without any external lighting. These cameras are use in dark, outdoor areas. The little circles around the lens are actually infrared illuminators, and the camera gets its light source from these illuminators to show a picture in pitch-black darkness. Night illuminators are also available to work separately from a camera in a outdoor camera housing and will illuminate a pitch dark scene in a larger area.

Covert or hidden cameras are available as well. These cameras actually look something other than a camera. These cameras can be when you do not want others to know you are actually using video surveillance. These cameras are available in smoke detectors, motion detectors, thermostats, telephones, clocks, exit signs, picture frame with picture, mirror, and more. A good example of this type of application is installing one of these hidden cameras over a cash register. Available in color or black and white.

Camera mounts can be used with the first two cameras on the page. They can be wall, or ceiling mounted and come in different colors to match decor

Cameras can also be mounted in low profile drop ceiling mounts or smoke colored domes. These mounts protect the camera and are more discrete or not as obvious as a camera mounted on a wall. These mounts are usually used in bars or taverns

Power Supplies

Plug in transformers provide power for cameras. They can be plugged into any 120 Volt outlet and power a camera. These power supplies can be used when there are only one or two cameras installed.  These plug in power supplies are not individually, therefore they do not protect a camera from a power surge, short or over voltage. These power supplies are much less expensive than multiple camera power supplies

Multiple camera power supplies can be used when there are more than four cameras. These power supplies take up much less space outlet wise. They can power up four, eight, or sixteen camera at one time.

Multiple camera video processors.

Multiple camera video processors allow for multiple camera viewing and recording on a single video recorder. These units below are a description of the different video processors available.

Switchers are low cost; desktop, sequential switchers designed switch manually to four, eight, twelve, or sixteen cameras to one or two monitors. A security video recorder will only record the amount of time each camera is switched to. Therefore, all cameras will not be recorded simultaneously, but as they are sequentially switched.

Quad processors are low cost, video processors capable of displaying full-screen or quad views of four camera inputs. The screen in divided into four and all four cameras can be recorded simultaneously. Quad units also can be used as a sequential switcher. You can not, however pull up a recorded image full screen. Available in color or black and white.

Multiplexers provide high-quality recordings and outstanding multi-camera displays. Available in 4, 8, 9, or 16 channel versions, multiplexers show and record 4, 8, 9, or 16 cameras simultaneously for recording on a single VCR. During recording and playback any camera may be viewed independently or combined in a multi-camera display. Every camera is recorded simultaneously. Some multiplexers also have a zoom feature used with either live or recorded video. You can pull up any recorded image full screen. Available in color or black and white.

Security video recorders

Security video recorders are industrial quality recorders made for repeated everyday use. The video recorder is the weakest link in the c.c.t.v. A recorded camera image never is as good as a live camera image. There are many different video recorders to chose from. Depending on the recorder, security video recorders can record up to either 8, 24, 48,96, or 168 hours on a single videotape or up to 960 hours on a digital recorder. Time lapse recording means if you were recording a person walking, you may see every third step, where as in real time, you would see every step the person takes. Real time means as close to real motion as the human eye sees. Some of the different recorder options are:

8-Hour Real -Time Video Recorders with Half Size chassis can record eight hours on one videotape.

Time-Lapse video recorders are available in 24, 72, 96, or 168 hour. These decks do not have automatic time and date search. These recorders are less expensive than real time or triple density decks.

24 Hour real-time Video Recorder with Half Size Chassis have Three Recording Speeds 8, 24, 40 Hours. Real Time. Time/Date Search, which lets you search a date and time on a tape without watching the entire video is a great feature.

Full Size Real-Time Triple Density Video Recorders record standard time-lapse and real-time recordings. Triple density means that three times the amount video signal is being recorded therefore you get a much clearer playback of recorded images. These recorders are available to record 24, 96 or 168 hours in real-time. These recorders have time and date search and more expensive than time lapse recorders.

Digital Video Recorders, or DVR's record camera images to a hard-drive, not a video cassette. The clarity and definition of each recorded image is much better than images recorded with a videotape. Prices of digital video recorders have dropped considerably in recent years, and are now very affordable. A digital video recorder can be set up to record motion events only, which means when there is no activity, no recording will take place.
DVR's also make searching for recorded events much easier by allowing a user to search specific times and dates. DVR's can be ordered with bigger hard-drives to store more images. Remote software is also included so you can view your facility from any computer.

A video recorder lock boxes protects the video recorder, as well as the tape inside the recorder. These units have a lock and key, as well as a fan to circulate air so the recorder does not over heat.

Monitors

Monitors range in size from 9 inches to 20 inches and are available in both black and white and color. Security video monitors allow you to use more than one monitor by connecting from one monitor to another. Television sets do permit this. Some monitors have audio while others do not.

 Remote Transmission Video

Remote transmission video allows you to view cameras with a modem and a computer from anywhere in the country. Imagine sitting at your home or office - maybe in your hotel room while on vacation or a business trip - viewing the activity at your sites using your laptop or PC. Now you can monitor your home or business for security and productivity from anywhere. You can connect by standard phone, cellular or high speed lines.
