A company can say it has experience. Very few locksmith and security companies can say their experience reaches all the way back to 1905. For more than 120 years, M. Spinello & Son Locksmiths Safe & Security Experts has served homes, businesses, schools, churches, municipalities, industrial facilities, healthcare properties, and organizations throughout Rockford and Northern Illinois.

During that time, security technology has changed dramatically: Mechanical Keys evolved into restricted key systems. Traditional Locks evolved into electronic locking hardware. Employee Keys evolved into cards, key fobs, and mobile credentials. Basic Closed-Circuit Cameras evolved into high-definition network video surveillance with intelligent person and vehicle detection. Manual Doors evolved into low-energy ADA automatic door operators. Local Computer-Based Access Control evolved into cloud-managed systems that can be administered from virtually anywhere.

Through every generation of that change, one principle has remained the same: Understand the customer's problem, recommend the right solution, install it correctly, and stand behind the work afterward. That is what more than 120 years of experience means at M. Spinello & Son.

Complete Physical Security Capabilities

Mechanical Locksmithing: Master Key Systems, Restricted Keyways, Commercial Door Hardware, Hollow Metal Doors & Frames, Safes & Vault Services. Electronic Security Systems: Cloud Access Control, Hardwired 4K Surveillance, Audio/Video Intercoms, ADA Automatic Door Openers, Electric Strikes & Locks.

Four Generations of Local Experience Since 1905

M. Spinello & Son was founded in Rockford in 1905. What began as a traditional locksmith business has continued through four generations while constantly adapting to changes in locks, doors, safes, electronic security, access control, video surveillance, and building accessibility. Our longevity matters because security is not an industry where customers should have to wonder whether the company they hire today will still be around when they need service later.

We have a permanent physical location at: Showroom Address: 522 Chestnut St., Rockford, IL 61102. Phone: (815) 963-0495. Customers can walk into our showroom, speak with our staff, purchase locks and safes, have keys made, discuss security concerns, and schedule professional service. We are not an internet referral service. We are not an out-of-state call center. We are not a company that appeared online last year and may disappear next year. We have been serving this community since 1905.

Experience Is More Than the Number of Years in Business

Being in business for more than 120 years is important, but longevity alone is not enough. The real value comes from what a company learns during those years: Every lock failure teaches something. Every broken commercial door teaches something. Every poorly designed access control system teaches something. Every security camera that was originally installed in the wrong position teaches something. Every building with uncontrolled keys teaches something. Every facility with doors being left unlocked teaches something. Every customer who previously purchased equipment that could no longer be serviced teaches something.

Over decades, those experiences influence how future projects are designed. At M. Spinello & Son, we don't approach a security project by simply asking: "What product can we sell?" We ask: "What problem are we trying to solve?" That difference matters.

More Than 45 Years of Hands-On Experience From Jimi White

Fourth-generation owner Jimi White entered the family business in 1981 after graduating from Boylan Catholic High School in Rockford. He started by cutting keys and learning the locksmith trade. After years of training, Jimi spent approximately 15 years performing locksmith service in the field. As electronic security technology began becoming more important to customers, he expanded into security cameras, card access systems, electronic locking hardware, and other electronic security products.

When customers began asking whether M. Spinello & Son could install camera systems and access control, the answer was yes. That meant learning the technology firsthand—connecting equipment, programming systems, testing installations, troubleshooting problems, and understanding how electronic security had to work together with the physical door and locking hardware. Jimi went on to spend more than 15 years personally installing, programming, servicing, and troubleshooting electronic security systems before eventually becoming the owner of the company.

Over the course of his career, he has helped introduce hundreds of locksmith and security products and technologies into M. Spinello & Son. That combination of mechanical locksmithing and electronic security experience continues to influence how projects are evaluated today.

Looking at the Entire Security Picture

One of the biggest advantages experience provides is perspective. A less experienced contractor may look only at the piece of equipment the customer initially asks about: The customer asks for a card reader, so they quote a card reader. The customer asks for another camera, so they quote another camera. The customer asks for a new lock, so they replace the lock. Sometimes that solves the problem. Sometimes it doesn't.

At M. Spinello & Son, we look at the entire security picture: Condition of the door and steel frame; Hinge alignment, door closers, and latch alignment; Panic hardware and mechanical key control; Electronic locking hardware and cloud access control; Video surveillance, intercoms, and ADA accessibility; Building traffic patterns and life-safety compliance; Reusable existing equipment, future expansion, and long-term service. The goal is not simply to install another product. The goal is to solve the security problem.

Finding Problems or Suggesting Things Others May Overlook

Experience is especially valuable when something isn't obvious: A customer may think an access control system is failing when the real problem is a sagging door that no longer properly engages the electric strike. A business may think it needs additional cameras when repositioning an existing camera could provide better coverage.

A facility may believe it needs to replace an entire access control system when portions of the existing wiring, locking hardware, or door equipment can still be reused. A property manager may think a lock is defective when a worn hinge or failing door closer is preventing the door from latching. A school may want tighter access control while still having uncontrolled mechanical keys circulating among former employees. A receptionist may need better visitor security, but the solution may require an intercom, electronic door release, proper lock hardware, and video verification working together. These are the kinds of issues that become easier to recognize after decades of hands-on experience.

Maximum Protection Without Wasted Cost

Experience should not automatically make a project more expensive. In many cases, it should do the opposite. A knowledgeable security contractor should be able to identify what needs to be replaced and what does not.

At M. Spinello & Son, we evaluate whether existing equipment can be safely and reliably reused whenever practical: Existing cameras and coaxial/Ethernet cabling; Electric strikes, lock hardware, and power supplies; Door contacts, network switches, and metal door frames; Access control power panels and mechanical key cylinders. If existing equipment is still dependable and compatible with the proposed solution, replacing it solely to increase the size of the project doesn't benefit the customer. Our goal is to provide the highest practical level of safety and security at the lowest reasonable cost without cutting corners on quality, installation, reliability, or long-term performance.

Mechanical Locksmithing Is Still the Foundation

Technology continues to change, but physical security still begins at the door. M. Spinello & Son continues to provide the traditional locksmith services our customers have depended on for generations: Residential and commercial rekeying; Lock replacement and lock repair; High-security deadbolts and commercial locksets; Master key systems and restricted key control; Panic and exit hardware, door closers, and continuous hinges; Automotive keys, key fobs, and remotes; Safe service, combination changes, and vault work.

Modern electronics can provide tremendous capabilities, but they cannot compensate for a door that doesn't close, a frame that is deteriorating, or mechanical hardware that doesn't work properly. That is why our locksmith background remains so important to our electronic security work.

Commercial Doors & Frames: The Security System Starts With the Opening

A card reader mounted next to a failing door does not create a secure opening. M. Spinello & Son provides commercial door and frame services that allow us to address the complete opening: Door & Frame Services (Hollow metal door replacement, steel frames, aluminum storefront doors); Hinges & Hardware (Continuous hinges, heavy-duty door closers, panic exit devices); Electrified Hardware (Electric strikes, electrified locksets, magnetic locks, power transfers); System Integration (Complete access control and intercom integration).

Instead of bringing in several contractors and hoping their work fits together, our customers can rely on one company to evaluate the entire opening. One company. One solution.

From Mechanical Keys to Cloud Access Control

One of the biggest changes in the security industry has been the transition from mechanical keys to electronic access control. Mechanical keys remain important, but they have limitations: keys get lost, employees leave, keys are loaned out, and unauthorized duplicates are made.

Modern access control provides additional tools for managing those risks: Add and delete credentials instantly; Issue physical cards, key fobs, or mobile credentials; Establish custom access schedules per door or user group; Review audit trails and historical access events; Receive instant notifications for door-forced or door-left-open conditions; Manage multiple facility locations from a single cloud dashboard.

M. Spinello & Son has worked through the progression from traditional mechanical security to server-based access control and now to modern cloud-based systems. That history helps us understand not only what the newest technology can do, but also what problems older systems create as they age.

Hardwired Video Surveillance Built for Long-Term Use

Security cameras have also changed dramatically. Early systems offered limited resolution, small amounts of storage, and basic local viewing. Today's professional hardwired systems provide high-definition 4K video resolution, full-color nighttime imaging and smart infrared (IR), intelligent AI person and vehicle detection, 24/7 continuous local recording (NVR/DVR), secure remote viewing via smartphone or PC, and large storage capacities with rapid video export.

M. Spinello & Son specializes in hardwired video surveillance because long-term reliability matters. Hardwired cameras eliminate battery replacement hassles and do not rely on Wi-Fi for video transmission. Our traditional locally recorded surveillance systems have no monthly surveillance fees and no annual contracts. Customers own their equipment and their stored video.

Experience Helps Determine Camera Placement

Camera quality matters, but camera placement matters just as much. Installing more cameras does not automatically create better surveillance. A professionally designed system considers entrances, parking lots, driveways, and loading docks; cash-handling zones, exterior inventory, and employee entrances; lighting conditions, mounting heights, viewing angles, and lens selection; target distance, physical obstructions, and nighttime illumination. The objective is not simply to cover a building with cameras—it is to capture useful, actionable video where it matters.

ADA Automatic Door Operators Require Complete Opening Knowledge

Automatic door operators are another example of why complete-opening knowledge matters. An ADA operator interacts with the door, frame, and continuous hinges; door closer functions and lock hardware; electric strikes and electronic access control; push buttons, touchless actuators, and safety sensors. M. Spinello & Son installs low-energy ADA automatic door operators and integrates them with all necessary locksmith and electronic security components. Customers don't have to coordinate one company for the lock, another for the access control, and another for the automatic operator.

Audio & Video Intercom Systems

Visitor management has evolved. A facility no longer needs to leave its front entrance unlocked simply because visitors need access. Modern audio/video intercom systems allow staff to see and speak with visitors in real time, keep exterior doors locked until identity is verified, remotely release doors from master stations or mobile apps, and integrate seamlessly with electric strikes and cloud access control. Once again, the value comes from understanding how all of these components work together.

Safe & Vault Experience Still Matters

M. Spinello & Son continues a long tradition of safe and vault work. Our services include fire- and burglary-rated safe sales (commercial and residential), depository safes and cash-handling protection, safe delivery, placement, and heavy-duty bolt-down installation, mechanical combination changes and digital lock conversions, and safe opening, lock repair, and vault door maintenance. A safe is a long-term purchase. Customers benefit from working with a company that understands the difference between basic retail boxes and high-security equipment designed for real protection.

Lessons From 120 Years: Quality & Communication

  1. Quality Matters: Over decades, you see what lasts and what fails. A cheaper initial price tag rarely translates to lower cost over time. Cheap lock hardware fails, poorly designed access control causes constant service calls, and improper camera placement fails to capture critical events. Experience teaches you to evaluate equipment quality, installation workmanship, warranty coverage, replacement part availability, and total cost of ownership.
  2. Communication Is Part of the Service: Security contractors sometimes focus entirely on equipment, but customers value responsiveness. M. Spinello & Son emphasizes clear, prompt communication: Same-business-day responses whenever possible; Free local on-site estimates and quick proposal delivery; Detailed, transparent scope-of-work documentation; Dependable post-installation support and training.

No Subcontractors Means One Point of Accountability

When too many contractors are involved in a security project, accountability dissolves. The door contractor blames the locksmith, the locksmith blames the access control installer, and the access control installer blames the electrician. M. Spinello & Son uses a direct model: Single-Point Accountability. Evaluation & Design, Installation & Wiring, Programming & Setup, and Training & After-Sale Support are all handled by In-House Technicians. Our own trained, licensed technicians handle the locksmithing, security wiring, access control programming, and camera installation. Zero subcontractors. One point of accountability.

More Than 500 Five-Star Google Reviews

A company's history shows where it came from; customer reviews show how it performs today. M. Spinello & Son has earned more than 500 five-star Google reviews from homeowners, businesses, facility managers, schools, and organizations throughout the region. We encourage prospective clients to compare our reviews, experience, services, warranties, and responsiveness. For commercial projects, we are happy to provide references from similar local jobs.

The Company Has Changed. The Commitment Hasn't.

The equipment installed in 1905 looks nothing like the cloud access control and 4K cameras installed today. The company evolved because security evolved. Locks, doors, codes, cameras, networks, and credentials have all changed over 120 years. But the primary responsibility of a security company has not: Protect people and property with equipment that works.
